Prayers from the Old Testament

Paul Aka

Welcome, everyone to EBN Church!

We are so glad you have chosen to join us today as we worship the Lord together and have fellowship!

The Bible says this in James 5:16; “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

Paul Aka, Pastor

The following are some prayers for blessing, protection, deliverance, salvation, wisdom, help, revelation, and more found in the Bible.

Hannah’s Prayer (1 Samuel 2:1-10)

Then Hannah prayed and said: “My heart rejoices in the Lord; In the Lord my horn is lifted high. My mouth boasts over my enemies, For I delight in your deliverance. “There is no one holy like the Lord; There is no one besides you; There is no Rock like our God. “Do not keep talking so proudly Or let your mouth speak such arrogance, For the Lord is a God who knows, And by him deeds are weighed.

“The bows of the warriors are broken, But those who stumbled are armed with strength. Those who were full hire themselves out for food, But those who were hungry are hungry no more. She who was barren has borne seven children, But she who has had many sons pines away. “The Lord brings death and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and raises up.

The Lord sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and he exalts. He raises the poor from the dust And lifts the needy from the ash heap; He seats them with princes And has them inherit a throne of honor. “For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s; On them he has set the world. He will guard the feet of his faithful servants, But the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.

“It is not by strength that one prevails; Those who oppose the Lord will be broken. The Most High will thunder from heaven; The Lord will judge the ends of the earth. “He will give strength to his king And exalt the horn of his anointed.”

Prayer for Instruction and Guidance

(2 Samuel 23:2): He inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?” The Lord answered him, “Go, attack the Philistines and save Keilah.” (2 Samuel 2:1): In the course of time, David inquired of the Lord. “Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked. The Lord said, “Go up.” David asked, “Where shall I go?” “To Hebron,” the Lord answered.

Jonah’s Prayer (Jonah 2:1-9)

From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. He said: “In my distress I called to the Lord, And he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, And you listened to my cry. You hurled me into the depths, Into the very heart of the seas, And the currents swirled about me; All your waves and breakers Swept over me. I said, ‘I have been banished From your sight; Yet I will look again Toward your holy temple.’ The engulfing waters threatened me, The deep surrounded me; Seaweed was wrapped around my head. To the roots of the mountains I sank down; The earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, Lord my God, Brought my life up from the pit. “When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, And my prayer rose to you, To your holy temple. “Those who cling to worthless idols Turn away from God’s love for them. But I, with shouts of grateful praise, Will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”
